Hello Everyone,
My name is Laura Hernandez and I currently serve as the Assistant Organizational Development and Human Resources Director for the City of Brownsville. What drew me to project management is the alignment it has with leadership development and organizational growth—it’s about building systems, managing resources, and ultimately creating outcomes that improve how people work together. What keeps me motivated is seeing the results: stronger teams, improved processes, and better services for our community.
One of my proudest accomplishments was creating and implementing ONE CITY U, our own internal supervisor academy that will prepare emerging leaders for future roles. It’s incredibly rewarding to see the positive ripple effect these efforts create throughout the organization.
I look forward to connecting, learning, and sharing ideas with this community!
Welcome, Laura! We look forward to learning from you as well - see you around the online community! Saving Changes...
Beatrix Krause-SorioResearch Scientist, Project Manager| Stanford UniversityStanford, California, United States
Hi everyone,
My name is Bea and I am an experienced research scientist and project manager at the Stanford University School of Medicine. I am passionate about healthcare solutions and medical imaging, and have been working with brain imaging and brain stimulation since my PhD at Oxford University, which I completed almost 10 years ago.
As a child, I never knew there were such professions, but I always followed my gut feeling and am grateful for every decision I have made along the way.
For the past few years, I have realized more and more that my strong organizational, analytical, and social skills fit best in the project management category, and I am ready for new challenges in the healthcare sector. After a short detour into medical writing, I gained valuable insights into company needs and structures, and I am excited to contribute to the productivity of medical development projects.
My greatest accomplishment might be my unlimited adaptability; I have lived in 5 countries and had to learn the respective languages for my professional life. I adapt easily to different cultures, personalities, and environments, and am able to anticipate and meet the needs and demands in each novel situation.

Hi Bea, welcome to PMI's online community!
It's great to learn more about you - thanks for sharing with us! I look forward to seeing you around the online community.
I'm Paula Barker, a Senior Project Manager with the Ministry of Finance in Ontario, Canada. I am excited to be part of this community and to connect with others who are passionate about project management.
What I wanted to be growing up:
I have always been drawn to roles that involve leadership, structure, and making a difference, so project management felt like a natural path.
Favorite tools & interests:
I enjoy working with Microsoft Project, Jira, and Power BI, and I am curious about how AI and data analytics are shaping the future of project delivery.
Why project management?
My career has taken me across Canada, from BC to Ontario, working in public service, higher education, and consulting. I have held leadership roles at Simon Fraser University, worked with Deloitte’s Public Sector Transformation Practice, and contributed to enterprise projects across the Ontario Public Service. I have stood up Crown Corporations and led Enterprise efforts across high-profile Ministries. I love the challenge of bringing people and systems together to deliver meaningful outcomes.
Why I’m here:
I am currently preparing to sit for the PMP exam, and I see it as a valuable way to complement my practical experience and the in-house project management training I have received through the Ontario Public Service. I am excited to deepen my knowledge and continue growing in this field.
Proudest accomplishment:
One of my proudest achievements was completing my Executive MBA at Ivey Business School while serving as Director of Operations and Administration at Simon Fraser University, which involved 48 flights between Toronto and Vancouver in just 18 months! I also earned a Human Resources Management Diploma from SFU during the pandemic while working full-time. These experiences taught me a lot about resilience, balance, and the value of lifelong learning.
Looking forward to learning from all of you and sharing the journey!
