In today’s fast-paced business world, projectized and matrix environments are becoming increasingly popular. These environments are characterized by their dynamic nature, which requires a high level of collaboration and communication among team members.

However, working in such environments can also pose ethical challenges that need to be addressed. Ethical learning is a lifelong process where its lessons are often based in principles, not rules, and not taught by rote.

Ethics are a set of moral principles that govern an individual’s behavior. In a business context, ethics guide an organization’s behavior and decision-making processes.

In my December 2023 Ethics Bistro blog titled "Applying Ethics and Ethical Learning in Projectized and Matrix Environments", I outlined several common ethical considerations to initiate a dialogue.

Open questions for this discussion include, but not limit to:
-- How can organizations ensure that their teams work together effectively and efficiently while maintaining ethical standards?
-- What are some effective tools for addressing ethical dilemmas in projectized and matrix environments?

Reflecting on your own experience, what other tools and techniques have you utilized, improvised, and/or found useful?

Absolutely agree with the outlined strategies! Navigating ethical considerations in projectized and matrix environments demands a holistic approach. Open communication, continuous training, and mentorship programs are instrumental in fostering an ethical culture. Integrating external audits adds a valuable layer of accountability. As someone who has encountered various ethical dilemmas, I find these insights aligning well with the dynamic nature of project management. The emphasis on ethical leadership is particularly crucial—it sets the tone for the entire team.

Many organizations have identified their "key values" that can serve as a guide to ethical behavior. In fact, PMI has two sets for two different contexts, one for professional conduct by project managers, and one for PMI's internal culture. When running projects within such an organizations, I have often used these key values as guideposts to explain why a proposed action in conflict with a key organizational value should be reviewed and alternatives considered.
