I've got a Commerce master's degree and currently work as an office administrator, specializing in operations and projects. I've already finished my CAPM certification, but I don't have much technical knowledge. I'm thinking of shifting my focus towards project management. Do you think it's a wise decision? I'd appreciate any advice you have for my career development in PM.

Hello Serin - and welcome to PMI's Online Community! Congratulations on taking your first step in joining our community. Regarding your inquiry, I highly recommend the following:

1. Review the many posts contained within our Certification Discussion Group at https://www.projectmanagement.com/discussions/604614/certification-central. Here you will find great suggestions from your fellow colleagues. You can reply to the comments in the various posts to gather additional information.

2. Reach out to your local chapter's website and request a mentor, as this is the best way to network with locals in your area and build relationships.

3. Complete your online profile with a picture, bio and special interests.

I also encourage you to please take a moment to introduce yourself to PMI’s Online Community at https://www.projectmanagement.com/discussion-topic/193917/welcome--introduce-yourself-to-pmi-s-online-community.

Serin -

It really comes down to what types of activities you enjoy and what you aspire to be doing in the near term. With your experience you might be able to step into a role as a junior PM working on smaller scale projects and progressively taken on bigger challenges. Alternately, a role as a project analyst might help you step into the PM job family.

I would suggest taking one or more self-assessments to get a better handle on what type of role might be the best fit for you.
