Hi all,

I recently made the decision to not continue with university. I am interested in the career of project management but I would like some guidance on how to get there, specifically with getting experience.

Here is what I plan to do so far:
- I am currently working as a personal assistant, and I also have previous executive assistant experience so I’d highlight transferable skills
- I want to complete a project management qualification like PRINCE2

How can I gain specific project management experience. Additionally, I would love to connect with current project managers for mentorship if that is possible. Please give me any advice you have for me.

Thank you
Maria :)

Hello Maria, and welcome to PMI's Online Community! Congratulations on taking your first step in joining our community. Regarding your inquiry, I highly recommend the following:

1. Review the many posts contained within our Certification Discussion Group at https://www.projectmanagement.com/discussi...cation-central. Here you will find great suggestions from your fellow colleagues. You can reply to the comments in the various posts to gather additional information.

2. Reach out to your local chapter's website and request a mentor, as this is the best way to network with locals in your area and build relationships.3. Complete your online profile with a picture, bio and special interests.

I also encourage you to please take a moment to introduce yourself to PMI’s Online Community at https://www.projectmanagement.com/discussion-topic/193917/welcome--introduce-yourself-to-pmi-s-online-community.

Maria -

I'd recommend taking a non-certification PM fundamentals course first, and then look for roles as a project analyst or coordinator where you'd be supporting an experienced PM in the administrative aspects of the role. That is usually a good stepping stone into a junior/associate PM position.

You will also need to gain industry/domain knowledge related to a specific industry in which you wish to manage projects as that knowledge is also critical to being an effective PM.

Great advice above Maria!

And do NOT worry about "What if I fail the test?"

If so, just re-load, study, and go again..
Cheers,
Bill
p.s. Just look at any ones certificate/diploma up on their wall.
Does it state how many times they took that test?
