Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Optimization and increased capacity are some of the benefits project managers gain when using AI. However, it is essential to be responsible with the information and its use, as professional ethics could be violated.

Gen AI is another tool in the Project Managers toolbox. Prompt Engineering is like have a cheat sheet or best practices instruction manual for that tool. Project Managers should be able to drive value by utilizing Gen AI and leveraging prompt engineering to streamline workflows and find additional value within projects.

Just like the competency in the use of any software or application, Prompt engineering will help PMs who are able to explore the value it delivers, differentiate themselves from other PMs who may not be interested. Education never ends and PMs may want to be consider developing keen interest in evolving technologies. However, no two projects are the same. Therefore, whilst the widespread adoption of Prompt engineering may commoditize some project management skills, it will be impossible for all the project management skills required for successful delivery of a project to be commoditized.

Tools like GenAI, Feedbacks on its usage potential and resultant be it good, bad or ugly (undesirable) needs to be analyzed by PMI.
Questions remain, 1. Whether all stakeholders have accepted GenAI and adapted to it, or they still doubt its usage and only look forward for human intelligence that a certified PM would bring in. 2. Will GenAI usage discount PMs' intellect when facts are being presented in a forum? 3. Does usage of GenAI "really" speeds up project work, in the whole life cycle of the project, or is it happening in some parts of the projects, while new lags are introduced due to the "real" nature of the project? 4. Will GenAI speed up process in "Natural biological organic growth" ? 5. Like Human Intellect, can GenAI work "Offline and without systems" in remote undeveloped inhabited regions?

The prevalence of GenAI is a welcome development and has proved efficient in cutting down task duration from probaly 3 hours to about 10 minutes!. As efficient as this AI tool is, it cannot engage with stakeholders and carry out people management with emotional intelligence, at least I don not believe it can, therefore the project manager adept at AI gains more leverage and indeed a higher value.

It can be a double-edged knife. Being able to properly manage AI tools and integrate them into day-to-day jobs can have a significant impact on the quality of work and the speed at which it is completed.
