Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Dear Community, As the technological advancements in AI happen at rapid pace, we will tend to undermine the importance of project managers. What we forget is that, tech experiments will pick up pace and many projects that were earlier shelved due to higher costs will see light of the day because the reduced cost of development and deployment. With the increased pace of tech development, the need of the hour from project managers would be to learn and integrate AI systems to be more and more productive. If a project manager is managing 2-3 projects, then a PM will be expected to handle 6-8 projects. Why? Because, a PM would not have to worry about scheduling, taking notes, sending out minutes, identify impacted steps, Changes from the original project plan due to delays. PM will have to learn to be agile and mindful. AI advancement will far from commoditize the PM role

I think that AI is a tool like Jira, Asana, etc. and that, as with any other industry tool, you can differentiate yourself by your proficiency with it.

Good prompt engineering is like good requirements engineering:

The quality of the output is directly tied to the clarity, completeness, and constraints of your input.

As a project manager with three decades of experience, I’ve seen countless tools and methodologies come and go. Prompt engineering, however, is not just another passing trend—it’s a transformative capability that reshapes how we interact with technology and lead projects.

Rather than commoditizing project management, prompt engineering has the potential to elevate it. The ability to craft precise, context-aware prompts for AI tools is quickly becoming a strategic skill. It allows PMs to: extract deeper insights from data and reports, automate repetitive tasks with greater accuracy, accelerate decision making and scenario planning.

In this new landscape, PMs who master prompt engineering won’t be replaced—they’ll be amplified. They’ll stand out by delivering faster, smarter, and more adaptive project outcomes. The key is not just knowing how to use AI, but knowing how to guide it effectively.

So yes, prompt engineering can absolutely help project managers differentiate themselves and command higher value—if they embrace it as a core competency rather than a threat.

With AI's adoption everywhere if you are not differentiating yourself using it as a 'copilot' to enhance your productivity, you are bound to become a commodity that is easily replaceable!

I agree with that statement that AI will only enhance our knowledge and capabilities. I use it often to sharpen and clarify my points. It is just another tool in the box!
