As adaptation requires tailored behavior for each scenario, I believe professionals will always find better ways to do tasks. Even with a reliable prompt database, continuous adaptation and improvement will be necessary.

The widespread adoption of prompt engineering is not likely to make project management skills a simple commodity—instead, it can help project managers (PMs) stand out and command higher value, provided they actively cultivate these new competencies and integrate them with core project leadership abilities.





Key Opportunities for Differentiation





Prompt engineering enables PMs to:



- Automate and enhance project planning, risk identification, reporting, and stakeholder communication, which leads to greater efficiency and faster, data-driven decision-making.



- Shift focus from admin-heavy tasks to higher-value strategic activities—building stakeholder relationships, leading complex negotiations, and managing change.



- Incorporate AI-generated insights to optimize resource allocation and performance monitoring, further elevating project outcomes.





Avoiding Commoditization





- While basic prompt engineering knowledge may become a baseline expectation, true differentiation will come from combining AI proficiency with deep project management expertise, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and the ability to translate organizational strategy into actionable plans.



- Mastering prompt engineering allows a PM to multiply their productivity and insight—not just automate tasks—which creates substantial ROI and elevates the PM’s impact on organizational transformation efforts.

Project management skills have been accompanied by lots of supporting tools for thier implementations so far. AI, though most advanced and influential, is one of such tools. Project managers can make use of it not to replace them, honestly it can't replace them. Use of the AI alone can't make a person apply project management skills because use of AI for project management purpose still demands understanding and insight of project management. Hence AI is a usefull tool for project managers to use in many areas of their endeavors and give them time and opportunity for strategic and humanly activities. Otherwise, AI can't commoditize the project management skills as any layman can't use it like any other simple tools.

Adoption of prompt engineering will only help Project Managers in different aspects but it cannot commoditize Project Management skills because theoretically all projects might have similar "attributes" but "context" is different like customer, project team, domain, country etc. This means Project Managers should use Prompt Engineering as "Augmented Intelligence".
Definitely, we need to see the AI as a support and learning tool at the same time. The AI is allowing us to teach it (and others) in our specific field or industry. Nevertheless, we can also learn more about different practices, and we as PMs could manage different challenges on a project.

I think it will help to differentiate project managers as prompt engineering mostly enhances the speed and expertise with which the PM can execute technical tasks. This will allow the PM more time and energy to leverage the soft skills that are equally as important to be a successful project manager such as properly manage stakeholders and lead and influence a project team.

I use AI tools to automate repetitive tasks and generate reports, saving time and improving accuracy. ChatGPT helps me explore alternative solutions, analyze scenarios, and enhance decision-making. These tools make my work faster and smarter, but they don’t replace the human element. Skills like judgment, communication, and empathy remain essential for leading teams, resolving challenges, and aligning stakeholders. AI enhances productivity, but effective project management still depends on human insight, collaboration, and the ability to connect strategy with people. In the end, technology supports success — it doesn’t define it.

Simply stated - AI is one of many tools/resources PMs can utilize for greater capacity. The more tools PMs are familiar with/have at their disposal the more nimble and effective they can be.
