Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Prompt engineering alone won’t differentiate you — but prompt engineering, expertise, creativity, strategic thinking, and the ability to ask the right questions will.

I believe every project is different and it has its own set of challenges and complexity varies based on organizational structure and business domain. Yes, I agree that some of the routine PM tasks will become easy with Gen AI and efficient Prompt engineering and it will follow a standard procedure, however it will be difficult to substitute the human's strategic judgement skill, contextualization and problem solving skills. AI will be augmenting the PM skills, but the differentiation will be always there with respect to system thinking, leadership skills, strategic insight etc.

In a constantly evolving world, the adoption of AI will help project managers be more efficient and make better decisions, thanks in particular to these AI tools. Project management will always have a role to play in guiding and validating the decisions proposed by AI.

By utilizing AI, it is easy to learn the good and bad points of past projects, which I believe will help lead projects to success.

However, because AI does not have emotions, I think that in situations where we must rely on human sensibilities, the humanity of the PM will be called into question.

If we consider the role of project management to have several layers, with different levels of complexity, I believe that GenAI and Prompt Engineering will disrupt to the level of almost extinction, the role of the junior PM. These will probably be replaced by more experienced PMs that will see themselves helped by the AI to become more productive. And, as we move up on the complexity scale, Gen AI and Prompt Engineering will help good experienced PMs to be more efficient and effective, once they learn how to use them to their advantage.

Gen AI is optimizing the roles in all areas. Especially in the project management space, the reports were simplified and adapted. The technological advancement will really make our lives faster and better in our life cycle.

Prompt engineering commoditizes the *documentation and assembly* layer of PM work (e.g., status reports, templates, risk registers, basic decomposition), but that was never where the highest value lived. PMs whose differentiation came primarily from information formatting will feel the squeeze; those who invest the freed capacity into organizational navigation, stakeholder trust, cross-functional translation, and judgment under ambiguity will actually gain leverage. The net effect isn't commoditization of the role, it's a forced migration upmarket, where the human-layer work becomes more visible and more valuable precisely because the mechanical layer is now table-stakes.

I strongly believe that the advent of Gen AI will not outrightly replaced the informed Project Managers but rather empower them to function optimally. Just keep up the pace of the technological evolutions and as Project Managers, we will always be relevant and adding value to our respective domains.

Hi Sara, I'm sure that using GEN AI as a support tool will definitely add high value to the Project Manager's work, saving a lot of time in data collection and analysis, preparing reports, summaries, and information that helps in making timely and accurate decisions, especially since it's very important to keep in mind that the final decision is always made by the PM based on their experience and insight.

Prompt engineering will likely separate average PMs from high-value PMs. Those who know how to guide AI effectively will be able to deliver results faster, manage more complex projects, and command higher value in the market.
