Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

As an AI enthusiast, I believe its potential goes far beyond being just another tool for specific tasks. Regardless of whether we serve as Project Managers, Agile Leaders, Business Managers, Product Owners, or in any other leadership role, we can all benefit from AI throughout the entire value creation journey—from business ideation and strategic planning to product delivery, growth acceleration, and continuous learning.

In practice, AI enables us to spend less time on operational activities and more time on critical thinking, decision-making, and insight generation. As a result, we are increasingly evolving into skilled reviewers and auditors, capable of validating information, challenging assumptions, identifying risks and opportunities, and responding more effectively to a wide range of situations.

I see AI as a powerful partner that enhances human capabilities, helping us become more prepared, adaptable, and resilient professionals—whether we are navigating stable environments or facing complex and turbulent scenarios. Ultimately, our greatest differentiator will remain our ability to exercise judgment, critical thinking, and leadership, now amplified by the power of AI.
