Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?
Prompt engineering shifts a PM's value from "the person who organizes the work" to "the leader who accelerates the business." PMs who resist AI adoption will face commoditization, while those who integrate prompt engineering will differentiate themselves as high-value strategic partners.
I believe prompt engineering has the potential to elevate project managers rather than commoditize them, but only when it's paired with strong project management skills. AI can dramatically speed up the process, but it still needs someone who knows exactly what the end deliverable should look like and can guide the tool in the right direction.
The human element is what makes the difference! Project managers are responsible for ensuring the final deliverable aligns with the project scope, meets stakeholder needs, and is accurate and actionable. AI can help generate ideas and accelerate the work, but it can't replace the judgment, communication, and strategic thinking that experienced project managers bring to the table.
That's why I always joke that AI is my favorite coworker :). It helps me work faster and more efficiently, but it's the partnership between AI and human expertise that creates the best outcomes.

Prompt engineering will commoditize some project management activities, but it is unlikely to commoditize great project managers. In fact, PMs who master AI and prompt engineering are likely to command higher value.
Prompt engineering won't commoditise project management — if anything, it raises the bar. PMs who leverage it effectively can automate routine tasks, freeing up time to focus on what truly differentiates them: stakeholder management, strategic thinking, and navigating complexity. Those who embrace it as a tool rather than fear it as a threat will be the ones commanding higher value in the evolving landscape.

Although prompt engineering and using GenAI to aid in the process of project management, I still value the unassisted skill that experienced PMs should have. Being able to do it without AI can be a real morale booster and revalidate yourself with your own skills and knowledge! Using GenAI can be useful, but honing our skills can never be an afterthought!
I see AI as a tool that helps project managers differentiate themselves rather than commoditize their skills. AI can streamline communications, reporting, metrics analysis, and data collection, allowing PMs to spend less time on administrative work and more time on leadership, stakeholder management, and strategic decision-making. The PMs who embrace AI and learn how to use it effectively will be better positioned to deliver value, improve outcomes, and stand out in an increasingly competitive environment. Saving Changes...

In my opinion, AI is not replacing project managers—it is redefining their role. By automating routine tasks such as planning, reporting, and data analysis, AI allows project managers to focus on what truly matters: leadership, strategic decision-making, stakeholder engagement, and innovation. The future belongs to project managers who can combine AI capabilities with human judgment, experience, and emotional intelligence. AI is a powerful partner, but accountability, vision, and leadership will always remain human responsibilities. Saving Changes...
Prompt engineering won't commoditize project management, Instead, it will automate routine tasks and amplify the impact of skilled PMs. The real differentiator will be the ability to ask the right questions, validate AI-generated outputs, align stakeholders, and make strategic decisions. AI becomes a force multiplier, not a replacement, for strong project management. Saving Changes...
