Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Several decades ago, when computers were becoming mainstream, there was a saying in the programming field - "Garbage In, Garbage Out". There is some kind of parallel with LLMs too. Of course, the refinement in LLMs happens over certain period. Prompt Engineering will only benefit a seasoned and creative PM and the complexity of the project can get reduced.

Leveraging AI is a mindset a PM has to adopt. AI is not going anywhere, and it is here to stay. So instead of resisting the adoption of AI, let us maximize its potential as a tool that can help us fetch the information that we need to make better decisions in a volatile project environment.

With correct prompt engineering usage in generative AI, it is expected that project management deliverables will be better done compared to the time past. The comparative advantage will be substantial.

I have been using AI to help simplify data analytics work. I find it very helpful for providing advanced excel formulas and SQL queries that assist in getting the work done quicker. I still need to validate and interpret the results for less technical audiences so I see AI as increasing productivity.
