Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

I think prompt engineering will eventually become a common skill, just like using Excel or other project management tools. As GenAI becomes easier to use, simply knowing how to write a good prompt may not be enough to differentiate a project manager.

The real value is in knowing what to ask, how to evaluate the response, and how to apply it to a real project situation.

For example, AI can help us create a risk register, summarize requirements, identify gaps, or draft stakeholder communications. But it is still the PM who needs to understand the business context, challenge assumptions, manage stakeholders, and make the final call.

So, I don't see AI replacing core project management skills. Instead, I see it taking away some of the repetitive work and giving PMs more time to focus on areas where human judgment and experience matter.

In the end, AI may make some PM tasks easier and more standardized, but PMs who combine AI skills with business understanding, critical thinking, communication, and good judgment will probably become even more valuable.

GenAI is a very powerful tool with great impact on productivity.

However, privacy and security concerns, the need to iterate through responses, validation of responses and the need to continually train the LLM points to the fact that human intervention cannot be ruled out, at least for the near future. As in any other field, the way the tool is used determines its effectiveness. As the saying goes, a tool’s value depends on the skill of the person using it. I believe PMs can make a difference even when LLMs wield tremendous power.

I think GenAI will commoditize parts of project management, but not the parts that create the most value.

As AI takes on more of the administrative work—status reports, meeting notes, project plans, etc.—the differentiator will become judgment, influence, asking the right questions, navigating ambiguity, and knowing what to do with the information AI gives you.

I also think prompt engineering itself will become less of a differentiator as it becomes more common. The real advantage will be knowing what to ask, why it matters, and how to turn the answer into action.

So maybe AI doesn’t make PM skills less valuable—it just changes which skills are most valuable.

The use of prompt engineering is crucial in the way it's used. PM skills are not something which can be replaced with getting answer from prompt but those responses can be used to accelerate various aspect of projects. End of the day someone has to use those responses from prompts and use it accordingly to drive result. This skill gives PMs boost to achieve high value. We all talk about prompts etc but the bottom line is we are bringing all the PM skill knowledge across the world under single umbrella using prompt where underlying tech is LLM and has been trained with mostly all available knowledge.

The advantagee will belong to PM's who learn how to combine human judgement with Ai effectively.
