Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?
I believe that adopting AI engineering is a valuable approach that should be fully leveraged. It helps us significantly reduce time and resource requirements, while also allowing us to examine aspects from multiple perspectives—much like a collaborative team effort. This enables us to allocate more time and resources to project activities that generate the greatest value for the organization. Naturally, human involvement is essential—before, during, and after the work performed by AI—to ensure that instructions are provided correctly, the process be monitored and validated, and the final output is reviewed. Furthermore, this must be aligned with the company’s governance framework and strategic objectives, and it should be periodically evaluated and updated based on shifting priorities and external factors.
While prompt engineering may streamline certain aspects of project management, skilled project managers who combine technical knowledge, soft skills, and strategic thinking could be continue to command higher value.
I agree with this. I'm using AI/ prompts to streamline my work and reduce my admin so I can spend more time thinking strategically. Saving Changes...

I agree that AI can make project management easier but not in a way were it can replace them. Al can possibly save time or keep things needer but these managers need to know how to do world wide solving as in communication or problem solving to work with their job and team. Using AI could help project managers be shown more or stand out.
I believe that the adoption of AI engineering would actually improve the project managers skills rather than commoditize them. With AI you are able to allocate stuff that would normally take away your time from other projects to the AI module to free up your time to allow you focus more on stuff that is pressing. Saving Changes...
While getting things done quickly can make project management easier, project managers who are really good at mixing technical know-how, people skills and smart thinking might still be worth more.
I can understand that view point. Social skills and having innovative mindset is always going to be valued pretty favorably in companies. Saving Changes...
Prompt Engineering is like another skill. You learn it and excel and use it widely with your experience. However the overreliance on language makes things subjective. Saving Changes...
I believe we are witnessing a new era in which technology and human expertise are collaborating to bring transformative changes to the IT landscape. As a result, the role of Project Managers has evolved beyond traditional project delivery. PMs now play a critical role in understanding AI capabilities, adapting strategies to meet project demands, mentoring teams through change, and ensuring robust data governance and security. By leveraging AI effectively, organizations can unlock greater value and achieve more impactful and realistic business outcomes.
