Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?
I believe we are witnessing a new era in which technology and human expertise are collaborating to bring transformative changes to the IT landscape. As a result, the role of Project Managers has evolved beyond traditional project delivery. PMs now play a critical role in understanding AI capabilities, adapting strategies to meet project demands, mentoring teams through change, and ensuring robust data governance and security. By leveraging AI effectively, organizations can unlock greater value and achieve more impactful and realistic business outcomes.

While we would be heavily relying on the agent or LLM we are using, it would definitely have benefits. To avoid a standard response for all project managers, prompts may have project specific details.
I believe prompt engineering will automate routine project management tasks while creating opportunities for project managers to demonstrate greater value. AI can improve efficiency, risk analysis, and decision-making, but it cannot replace human judgment, leadership, and strategic thinking.
The real competitive advantage will come from combining AI capabilities with the three areas of the PMI Talent Triangle: Ways of Working, Power Skills, and Business Acumen.
Ultimately, AI will not replace skilled project managers, but project managers who effectively leverage AI may have an advantage over those who do not.
