Validating and checking outputs is critical when working with AI systems like Generative AI. Such validation approaches may include establishing clear criteria, implementing strong testing protocols, and continuous refinement.

In your experience with AI, what are some best practices for ensuring the results you receive are accurate, relevant, and aligned with your original goals?

Be Precise in terms of your inputs and ensure the check of outputs as AI gives vast output where you have to select the right information.

I use AI as a smart assistant, not an oracle: I start with a clear goal, audience, and constraints, then break my request into smaller parts (for example, sections of a business case) and refine them iteratively. I give structured prompts and examples to reduce generic output, and I always verify any numbers, dates, and strong claims against my own data or experts before using them, adjusting prompts or tools whenever the result doesn’t match my original goal.[projectmanagement]

Keeping prompts simple using one of the prompt formulas is critical to ensure the output is concise enough to review fully and verify accuracy.

Provide a clear objective, with outcome you desire, who it is for and how it will be used. Provide context like you would to a human, giving background information, constraints and what has been done and what needs to be done. Use formulas like RTF or CREATE for specificity and expectations. Ask the LLM for analysis to back up its answers and reasoning. Always iterate to get the most consise outcome from the LLM.

Using AI effectively comes down to being clear, thoughtful, and a bit skeptical. I always start with a clear goal and give enough context so the output is actually useful. I don’t take responses at face value - important information needs a quick validation.

I also refine my prompts as I go, because the first answer is rarely the best. Most importantly, I check if the output truly supports the objective, not just sounds good.

In the end, AI works best when it’s guided by clear thinking and backed by human judgment.

I'll often refine my query if I don't get the type of response I expect. Different phrasing or terms can alter the response which allows me to compare results and choose the best output to suit my needs.
