Validating and checking outputs is critical when working with AI systems like Generative AI. Such validation approaches may include establishing clear criteria, implementing strong testing protocols, and continuous refinement.

In your experience with AI, what are some best practices for ensuring the results you receive are accurate, relevant, and aligned with your original goals?

Been clear about your role and providing specific details as permitted within the business. A repeated refining after first prompt will help guide AI on providing accurate results to be followed up by checks for compliance.

The more specific the request, the more specific the answer, but not always. I was asking a question about using an expired passport for ID verification and employment eligibility. The AI tried to open a case so that I could seek asylum from Nicaragua! I wanted to tell the chatbot that it was hallucinating, but since it was a government site, I refrained! I thought my prompt was extremely specific, giving an exact document, and exact status, and the complete context of its use. I decided to NOT iterate on this one since they wanted my contact info to call immediately!

One of the best practices is to treat prompting as an iterative process rather than expecting a perfect result from the first attempt. I believe this is a discipline that needs to be developed through practice: evaluate the output, identify what is missing or inaccurate, refine the prompt, and iterate until the result is aligned with the original goal.

It is also important to provide clear context, define the expected outcome and constraints, and critically validate the AI's response rather than accepting it at face value.

In my view, the key is to develop a continuous feedback loop between the prompt, the output, and the original objective. This helps improve not only the quality of the results, but also the user's ability to work effectively with AI systems over time.

For me, it is similar to reviewing any other project deliverable. I don't assume it is correct just because it looks complete and well written.
I try to give the AI enough context, be clear about what I need, and then challenge the result. Does it make sense? Are the assumptions correct? Can I verify the key facts and sources?
The more critical the decision, the more important the human review. AI can help us get there faster, but as PMs, we still need to apply our own knowledge and judgment before using the result.

Be specific, clear and concise with the prompts that are being used and allow for changes as things evolve over the course of the project.
