My recommendation is going to PMI´s Glossary of Terms. In the webpage you will find a definition of Activity. Task is not in the glossary then is not a recognized term for the PMI (As far as my knowledge and experience reaches)

An activity might not have a distinct completion point, like change management. It is more a type of work. A task on the other hand is finite, such as an individual change incorporation.

Leena, to add to Keith's feedback, an activity can refer to a series of actions and can include tasks, but they can also include routine actions, processes, or even non-work-related events.

Leena -

The two terms are frequently used interchangeably. Activity is the term recognized by PMI whereas Microsoft used the term Task to describe what a project schedule was made of in MS Project.
