I am looking to establish a formal PMO organisation and governance structure, initially internally faced for the organisation and then latterly able to support change with external clients.
There is a lot of material and training available, although I wondered if the community had any advice in terms of formal training and certification.
I am looking for training to cover structure, governance, roles, competencies and activities
I cannot find anything specific in PMI for this and wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction if I am missing it?
As an alternative I have seen the House of PMO offer training that looks applicable, and to see if anyone has experience of these offerings? Thanks
The PMO Value Ring methodology can help you with your endeavor. In terms of training, you have two certifications: PMO CP (Certified Practioner) and PMO CC (Certified Consultant).
While you could certainly read some books about PMOs and/or take courses, I'd start with the basics such as:
1. What is the rationale for establishing this PMO?
2. What is the initial set of capabilities or services it needs to offer and what do stakeholders wish it to evolve into?
3. At what level of the organization will it report in to?
4. Do all senior stakeholders buy into the rationale for having a PMO and do they have a shared vision?
Without alignment on the answers to these questions, your PMO could end up crashing & burning.

Creating a PMO is the same than creating any other business unit inside an organization (brief): 1-organization must define strategy. strategy is defined in terms of the functions/process that will help to answer environmental request. 2-those functions/procedures must be located in a place or several places. then, a new business unit could be created calling it PMO. From that value streams, solutions and roles/responsabilities are generated and implemented inside the PMO or the business unit the organization decide to create. So, nothing new below the sun. If you are planning on setting up a PMO, I highly recommend you look into PMO Global Aliance's (PMOGA.world) materials and the accompanying PMO-CP certification. It recommends full engagement of the stakeholders you and your executive team deem to be important along with stakeholder surveys about what they think are the top five desireable benefits from a list of benefits developed by PMOGA based on input a hundred or so PMO experts around the world. The synthesis of the responses then then links to 26 pre-defined PMO functions. The weighted desired benefits across the group help you determine which PMO functions are needed for your organizaation. Everything the PMO does, including measuring performance, set up of the team and more ties back to the benefits your stakeholders say they want a PMO to deliver.
This sort of scan based on PMO functions and benefits (derived from those PMO experts) will help you set up a successful PMO. You can repeat these surveys periodically once you are established to continue your PMO's evolution.
PMI recenlty acquired the PMO Global Alliance and are now integrating it into the organization.
Feel free to reach out and I'll be glad to chat about my PMO experiences. Saving Changes...

If you're interested, I have a proposal document that was used in our organization that I can share. It's essentially a project charter for standing up the PMO.

Richard, I agree with Mike. PMOGA is a the place to start and PMO-CP credential is a great way to start. PMOGA has their own methodology (Value Ring Methodology) and it walks you through everything step by step! Saving Changes...
