I have just been promoted to a PM at my long term employer. This is a brand new position so there is not any processes or standards in place, I'll be creating it all. I'm coming from the accounting department where I also managed the facilities and major renovations without any formal documentation processes. I have started the training for my CAPM. I would love to know what gems you found most beneficial in and outside of PMI. A great podcast or youtube? I would love to focus my energy in the right direction. I am also trying to learn smartsheets inside and out as I think that is what we will be using. Thank you for any insight! Saving Changes...
With this being a new position, their definition of project management may differ from the PMBOK Guides definition, so don't rush into a lot of formal processes that people aren't used to doing. Likewise, if they're not already using a tool to track their daily work, getting them to track project work can be challenging.
What does leadership expect from this position? Are you expected to be the expert?
How can you help others succeed?
If your CAPM class is an exam prep class, it may focus more on preparing for the exam than on how to be a better project manager. You can find material on project management fundamentals on Udemy, Coursera, and YouTube.

I am expected to be the expert and design our processes. I'm sure they will morph overtime as I learn more. I'm really hoping to get a good grasp of some tried and true processes since I'm starting with zero. In my history I jump in and get things done but don't stop to "document". As I'm going to be managing projects bankwide and including people across the business I am going to need to have a good system for workflow and notifications and such. I want to streamline and make things efficient for everyone and for ease of adoption as well. It is the exam prep as they would like me to get certified asap. I will look at these other options for fundamentals as well! Thank you!

Before defining and implementing processes for delivering projects, I'd start by working with your leadership to get some basic project intake governance defined such as:
- What is the definition of a project for your company?
- Who is able to approve the launch or termination of a project?
And when it comes to defining delivery processes, start by identifying the delivery & control objectives which your stakeholders have and then come up with the simplest set of processes and templates to achieve those. Make sure you actively engage with the key stakeholders such as other project leads, functional managers and sponsors to ensure that there is buy in and they have a chance to shape these preliminary processes.

Thank you for the sound advice. I have to start somewhere and smaller/simpler might be the best way until I've learned much more.

Good luck, and welcome, Rebecca.
Most of us have been there (at the start of a PM career).
For now, learn and improve.
Rebecca, remember to ask questions and seek guidance. PMI offers some free basic courses (Kickoff) and CAPM is a good option. Don't forget to find a mentor, just like you did here.
Soon in my career, I understood that PM is people business, so develop your personality, empathy, and influence. If you can switch industries, you will learn a lot. I am industry agnostic, but not all employers understand it.

Thank you, Thomas! Thankfully I have a good working relationship and rapport with most of the people I will be working with on projects. I feel like EI and empathy are some of my strengths. I need to focus on the documentation and details. I think smartsheets will be beneficial in that with the workflows and notifications and such. I really appreciate the help and connection!

Forget about training. The important thing is to understand the strategy behind to implement project management process. And it depends on lot of things which are from it is needed because it will help to position the company in a place where it can win things like bids to corporate visibility on clients. So I can wrote a lot in this place but it is not enough room for this My recommendation is going to PMI´s business anlisys publications mainly starting with practice guide where you will find a process called needs analysis (or strategy analysis) that is about this matter.

Thank you Sergio! They are requiring the training and certificate so that is the first step in their eyes. I'd love to learn the tools first. I will find the needs analysis and take a look! Thank you!

Rebecca, my fellow colleagues gave solid feedback. One thing to add: Consider joining the mentorship program at your PMI local chapter. Most PMI chapters have free (or for a nominal feel) mentorship programs where they pair you with a mentor for 6 months. This is a great way to seek advise and gain knowledge from industry veterans.

Thanks Rami! Is this separate than the state chapters? I did join the NH chapter.

No, it’s not separate. Most chapters have this program. Check with your NH Chapter if they have one and if they do, it would be beneficial for you to join it and have a mentor for 6 months.
