I am aware of the advantages that remote work offers but it does not always work, there are some elements such as flexible hours and the elimination of commuting time, which are direct benefits but also present unique challenges. Have self-determination and the appropriate control mechanism. Some elements that I have obtained that help me are the following: 1. Establish a Dedicated Workspace: Having a specific place to work will help you concentrate and separate your work life from your personal life. 2. Maintain a Routine: It is important that you maintain a routine as if it were a work schedule. 3. Use the Right Tools: Take advantage of tools like Slack, Zoom, and Trello to stay connected and organized. 4. Establish Clear Boundaries: Communicate your work schedules to your family or roommates to avoid interruptions. 5. Manage Time Effectively: Use techniques like Pomodoro to stay productive and avoid burnout. What other basic tools would you recommend? What are the main challenges for it to work and be maintained over time?

I would add:

6. Invest in good quality equipment and furniture so that you are able to work safely and sustainably. That includes a good quality coffee machine :-)

7. Tailor your location based on the needs of the work - if a particular event is better attended in person, don't hesitate to do so just because it is more comfortable to work remotely.

Kiron,
Investing in quality equipment is an underrated statement! In addition to the coffee machine, I'd add quality ergonomic chair/desk/keyboard etc. I love the ability to stand or sit while at my computer.

In response to Ned,
Using the *right* tool is so important, and the only way to maintain an efficient system over time is through regular evaluation. Especially for contract PMs who work with different teams from project to project, as each organization has a different way of doing things.

If remote work does not work a key thing is the attitude of the workers. I am saying that because I am working remote from 1998 up to date. I know it will sound controversial but I can sustain my comment. At the end, each one has to made a cost/benefit analysis and determine what is the best for the initiative

That really depends on your project. In an industrial environment, a lot of the up to date communication isn't digital. It's a face to face conversation with the team leads as decisions are being made.

Some work is easier done in your office without interruption. Others relies on hearing the interruptions around you daily to know where you need to pay attention.
