Mario, I have a question for you: Why would you think Prompt Engineering and Ai are going to revamp the PMBOK? Just trying to understand your perspective first.

Totally agree. Is not about prompt engineering. Is about generative AI. The PMBOK becomes obsolete with tools like PMI´s Infinity. I guess that the PMI is aware on that and is working on "reinvent" not only the roles related to project management but the roles related to business analysis. My personal opinion and I can justify is roles like project/program/portfolio managers and business analyst "are dead" in the way they was originally defined. Mainly, returining to your point, how they act following the process and KAs defined on the standards. Just doing the PMI´s generative AI courses will show it.

Sergio,
'PMBOK becomes obsolete with tools like PMI´s Infinity'.
While it is likely that there will be references to AI as a supportive set of capabilities and enabling tools in subsequent foundational standards & practice guides, I doubt there would be wholesale changes to the structure or philosophy behind these.

It seems the advisory/ strategic board members are promoting AI and prompt engineering on PMI and other personal platforms which makes it evident what direction PMI will be heading. Can't ignore the way AI is catching fire in the industries, it will burn down most and many of the professions not just Project Management.
What really matters is, will AI applications be practical to use in reality? like today a project manager have to use different apps for scheduling, planning, presentation preparation, reporting apps, etc. By the time all domains and principles that PMI have consolidated in PMBOK7 are not offered via a single app/platform, AI wont get its position as people have been claiming. If they really ignore the practical part of its application within small and big companies that practice project management, PMI may call for its own downfall. an extra food for thought- People are not used to adopting to change so fast. We are talking of Industry 5.0 while many industries and companies within are struggling to adopt to industry 4.0 norms both financially as well as human resource wise. And PMI have just upgraded to PMBOK7 with Agile methodologies in 2021 Aug. I see PMI as a brand and a professional standards brand should & will give time for the people to imbibe PMBoK7 completely before upgrading. Yes, there could be few questions here & there in the exams related to prompt engg or AI, or, they may not. or there could be micro credentials around the topic. But these changes doesn't threaten the change in PMI structure.

Hello, thanks for the your contributions and feedback.
In reality I put "Gen AI and Prompt Engineering" in the same bucket while in reality my intention is to understand if AI is accelerating the obsolescence of PMBOK Standards and Practice. Regards to all, Mario. Aug 20, 2024 2:58 PM
