"We’ve observed significant evolution in TPM roles over the past decade in tech companies. How has the TPM role specifically changed in recent years with the rise of agile methodologies and the shift to remote work? What new skills are now essential for TPMs in today’s tech industry? Additionally, how do you foresee the TPM role adapting to the growing integration of AI and automation in project management?"

The role of the TPM has evolved with the increase in demand for technology-based projects, especially across the ICT industries. It requires the PM to be grounded in the trending technologies. AI is a specific requirement that a TPM must be able to utilize to enable efficiency on projects through automation.

All roles, like business analyst, project/program/portfolio manager, developer in most of the languages, architects must reinvent themselves with the new models of generative AI in place. If not, they are "dead on arrive". PMI´s free courses about generative AI are a best source for understanding that.

The shift from traditional planning to iterative cycles could mean that the once detailed, long-term project plans are adjusted to shorter planning cycles that require frequent reassessment of the product backlog, and making adjustments based on feedback after each sprint. I believe that agile methodologies alter the TPM role into a more adaptive, team-centric, and value-driven role that is focused on constant delivery.
Seeing as though the rise of agile would increase collaboration and facilitation, the shift to remote work will make this a tough transition for a traditional TPM.

The new trends in our profession such as hybrid project management, home remote working and AI will require a major shift of our skills towards a higher level and awareness of leadership (in the sense of being able to switch among multiple leadership styles and not use the ones that come more natural to us), as well as a focus on stakeholder management and coaching of the teams. All these are key elements related to the soft/power skills.
