Are you managing project life?

Last year in December, I wrote an article called “Are You Managing Project-Life, Heed This Wake-Up Call,” where I challenged others to look at their work/life balance as you never know when life will catch up to you and put you into a spin cycle.

In a couple of weeks, I’m coming up on my first anniversary of the event that triggered that article, a heart attack that I barely survived, one that had me in cardiac arrest on the surgical table and revived thanks to the miracle of defibrillation and the expertise and medical devices deployed by the medical team.

When I woke up, my first words were, “I had a dream; I saw a light,” then they told me how they had to defibrillate me twice, and as you might imagine, I was in complete awe and was grateful beyond measure.

Moments like these change your life, and you want it to mean something beyond “a bout with Covid, a blood clot, then a heart attack.” Although the article tells the story of my out-of-balance work life that contributed to this event and my challenge to others not to make the same mistake, I feel that a periodic reminder to have a “project-life check-point” every year is appropriate.

So, let me ask you, my friends, are you managing project life, keeping your finger on the pulse of the project, and making sure you’re on the path to your life goals and objectives?

In life, perhaps success is not just about managing projects, but about managing life itself, prioritizing health, balance, and meaningful goals before it's too late.
