Have you ever had the opportunity or been in a situation where the project sponsor or the CEO directly asked you whether a particular project needs to be continued and you replied no? What was the reason behind it?

One specific scenario I've experienced involved projects where initial scoping provided insufficient information, and as the project matured, a comprehensive business case revealed fundamental unfeasibility. Another critical situation occurred in technology development, where rapidly changing market scenarios necessitated project termination. My approach has always been to conduct thorough analysis, to assess whether continuing a project aligns with organizational goals. This often involves detailed evaluations and ensuring that resources are strategically allocated and organizational objectives remain the primary focus.

Thanks for your input Francisco! The reason of rapid technology development leading to project termination reminds of what I learned in the PMBOK guide. And I agree that thorough analysis is crucial in these scenarios.

Yes, absolutely. To me, a good project manager is someone who isn't afraid to say no at the start.

Not directly, but I saw a similar situation once. A feasibility project that I was a part of proposed certain energy efficiency improvements to a 50-year plant. The implementations of these energy efficiency improvements was a different project that I was not a part of. However, the operator of the plant carried out major maintenance on the plant before these interventions could be implemented.
When the new project started, the team re-did the energy efficiency measurements and found out that there was no need of these interventions anymore. So the project ended.

This situation can occur often. A good strategy is to determine when a project should continue and when a project should be suspended. A project suspended due to unfavorable conditions isn't a failure, rather it is a way to preserve stability.
Control and Monitoring processes are fundamental within Project Management work. Control Activities give metrics that help the Project Manager and Sponsors have an overall project status, facilitating decision-making.

Well explained, Veronica! I agree with monitoring because sometimes we need to analyze data over a period of time to predict how it might end which can still save the company time and money.
