Laura, to foster strong sponsorship and support from stakeholders, start by identifying and categorizing them, understanding their interests, and determine what motivates them because this helps you tailor your approach and ensures that you can address their specific needs.

It’s also important to maintain regular updates and be transparent in your communication, sharing both successes and challenges openly. Engaging stakeholders in decision-making empowers them but strengthens their investment in the project’s success.

Above all, delivering on your promises is crucial. Following through on your commitments builds trust and credibility over time, which is essential for fostering long-term sponsorship and support.

The key is to ensure there is alignment between the project's objectives and their needs & wants. This starts by early engagement and by using all of one's EI skills in working with them to ideally forge a win-win approach.

Laura,
Strong sponsorship starts with thoroughly understanding the sponsor's priorities, challenges, and objectives. Establishing a meaningful connection requires aligning your goals with the sponsor's vision and priorities. By clearly articulating your needs and demonstrating how they contribute to shared objectives, you can foster trust and collaboration. Open and transparent communication from all parties is vital for building rapport and maintaining successful sponsorship relationships.

It depends specifically on the stakeholder group you want to engage. Each group will have a different role along with the interest level and influence level as Rami noted. Kiron's note about aligning objectives within the project teams is quite important as the team helps execute and drive initiatives forward. In my experience, I found that sponsor alignment & engagement might be the single biggest thing that enables project success. Sobharani's notes on engaging sponsors resonates with me. PMI CEO Pierre's talked about sponsorship in a Youtube video which had a few good takeaways: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzL9b5h8JMM

To foster sponsorship and build strong support from stakeholders, it is crucial to highlight the overarching business value that the project delivers. This involves clearly articulating how the project aligns with organizational goals and contributes to long-term success. Establishing priorities for each stakeholder is essential, as it ensures their needs and expectations are addressed, fostering a sense of ownership and commitment. For the sponsor, a comprehensive SWOT analysis can be instrumental. By identifying the sponsor's strengths and leveraging them, addressing any weaknesses, capitalizing on opportunities, and mitigating threats, you demonstrate a strategic understanding of their role and the project's impact on their objectives. Additionally, maintaining open communication, providing regular updates, and involving stakeholders in key decisions cultivate trust and buy-in, ultimately leading to enhanced support and collaboration throughout the project lifecycle.
