I see many trainings, webinars, and learning opportunities concerning AI. Not just at PMI but across the industry. But I have not heard of one that everyone is say, "That's it!, that's the one to get!" Is PMI looking to lead the way as more AI projects and positions surface from companies? My current employer has now opened an entire AI department. So it is coming faster than we think, if not already here. Saving Changes...
As AI becomes integral to project management, having a well-recognized training path could help professionals adapt and thrive in this rapidly evolving landscape. What specific skills or topics do you think PMI should prioritize in their AI initiatives? Saving Changes...

Similarly to how the PMP Follows the CAPM, I believe PMI should have a foundational certification regarding AI that centers around terms, generative, NLP, ML and how AI is used in Project Management industry wide. I believe right now the focus is on automation and data sets, etc. From there the more in depth exam & cert focuses on AI driven Project Management and the standard of how its used across all practices. Think in terms of task automation, scheduling, resource allocation, risk and issues, tracking and deliverables, common AI tools, etc. To be honest, the more I think about it, we may just not be ready yet as industry practices are still being developed.

Quentin McGlory Great idea! A foundational AI certification from PMI could help standardize AI concepts in project management. As AI evolves, a tiered approach would ensure professionals stay ahead.

My first question would be "Do PMs need an industry wide exam and certification for AI?" What is the value? Is this something employers are looking for, or is it just another dopamine hit and acronym to include on your LinkedIn profile? If there's value in it, I'm not opposed, but I am opposed to the gamification of certifications. Winning is not defined by getting the most badges.
Pavan's suggestion has merit for a training course. I've taken several GenAI courses, so I do see value in the knowledge, but I would want to see more businesses listing specific AI skills as requirements for project managers before I even considered getting certified.
Given how the PMBOK Guide has been changing, it wouldn't surprise me to find a section on using GenAI for PM work in the next version. I have a question for anyone who recently passed the PMP exam - were there AI-related questions on the exam? This would be a signal for potential AI content in an upcoming version of the PMBOK Guide.

Great points! AI knowledge is valuable, but a full certification only makes sense if employers truly demand it. Right now, training seems more practical. If AI-related topics start appearing in the PMP exam, that might signal a shift.

Quentin, PMI already offers an AI-focused course, exam, and certification. If you check under the "Certifications" section on PMI's website, you’ll find the Cognitive Project Management for AI (CPMAI) certification.
In case you're not aware, PMI recently acquired Cognilytica, who originally offered their own course, exam, and certification. PMI and Cognilytica are in the process of integrating their systems, so for now, the course and certification are still available through Cognilytica's LMS platform (https://courses.cognilytica.com/cpmai/). However, it will soon be fully transitioned to PMI's LMS, and I believe at that point, the exam format will change (e.g., the nature of the questions, the structure, and it may become proctored).
I recently completed the course and exam myself, and I can confirm there’s a wealth of valuable information in it. It added a lot of value to my knowledge and skills.
Hope this helps!

Did you find the knowledge questions enough to prepare you for the exam? I am currently 30% through and downloaded all the materials but am curious on if I will be prepared or actually remember all that information by the time I get to the exam.
Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

That's a great observation, Quentin! You're right, AI is exploding and it feels like everyone is scrambling to catch up.
While I don't have any spoiler alerts, I can say that PMI is definitely aware of the growing need for AI-focused project management resources. Keep an eye out for potential developments in that area, perhaps even something related to micro-credentials 😉.
