How did we all end up as Project Managers? For me, in eachj organization i worked, additional to my daily functional tasks, I kept getting assigned to projects and eventually found myself leading them in the PMO. What about the rest of you? What was your calling?

Hi Francisco!
I think that like many project managers, my path was unconventional and unintentional at first. I just always found myself driving change, driving results, bringing the right people into the conversation. It just felt like a natural transition!
Amanda that sounds very much like my own story. It really resonates with my experience. Thanks for sharing!

The short story is that I suggested we use an internal employee instead of hiring a PM contractor to help with a new project, and that we backfill our team with a contractor - lower cost and our team already had a relationship with the department that needed a PM. A week later, they offered me the opportunity.
That's a great anecdote Aaron! It sounds like something that could have happened to many of us here. Thank you for sharing your experience!

I started out in design engineering where my lead and manager gave me growth opportunities such as the technical coordination role on projects with more complexities and different groups involved.

Where my career really took a turn was when assigned a hand picked team of experts, some of whom trained and mentored me, to address some urgent top-priority issues. The reaction from the team was completely unexpected and very humbling when my team members told me that they understood the importance and difficulty of my new role, and that they were glad that I was selected as team leader.

Keith that's a great story, and it really highlights the importance of having good mentors or coaches to guide us in our careers. It was similar for me too. It makes me think that 'How important has mentorship been in your project management journey?' would be another interesting question for the forum. Thanks for sharing your insight!

My journey started in organizational and strategic management, not project management.
But over time, I realized that the most effective way to drive change and deliver lasting value was by applying a project-based approach.
That realization was my wake-up call — and it led me to dive deep into project management, and embrace it not just as a discipline, but as a strategic way of thinking and leading.

That's a great question! It was almost accidental, journey into the world of Project Management. For me, it wasn't some grand plan from the start. In every place I worked for, alongside my regular functional responsibilities, I just kept getting tapped to help out with projects.

It usually started small – maybe contributing to a specific task or coordinating a few activities. But then, little by little, I'd find myself taking on more responsibility, organizing the team, and making sure things were on track. Before I knew it, I was essentially leading these initiatives, even without the formal title.

Eventually, it just made sense. My skills in organization, problem-solving, and getting things done were clearly suited for it. Personally, it wasn't a sudden calling, but more of a gradual realization that this was where my strengths and interests aligned.

Xitlalic really inspiring story! I really enjoy how you gradually earned more responsibility by proving yourself, and now looking back, it all just clicks into place. It’s a great reminder that sometimes the best career paths happen naturally!

Thanks for sharing!
