How did we all end up as Project Managers? For me, in eachj organization i worked, additional to my daily functional tasks, I kept getting assigned to projects and eventually found myself leading them in the PMO. What about the rest of you? What was your calling?

I’ve always been someone who enjoys working collaboratively and contributing to team goals, but what really shaped my path into project management was my natural curiosity. I tend to dig deeper into topics asking questions about the context, the “why” behind decisions, and how everything connects. That curiosity often led me to get involved in cross-functional projects, even beyond my formal role.

Over time, I realized I wasn’t just contributing I was helping shape and drive outcomes. That initiative eventually led me to participate in strategic projects, and now I’m part of the Strategic Projects team, where I help oversee and align key initiatives with the company’s overall strategy.

So in my case, curiosity and collaboration were the doorways and project management just felt like the natural next step.

That's a great story Nayeli! It really shows how curiosity and collaboration can guide your career path. For me too, asking questions and working with different teams has always been important. It sounds like those same things naturally led you to project management, just like they have for me! Thanks for sharing!

During the digital project at AM Aceros, I realized that being a Project Manager goes far beyond coordinating tasks: it involves leading teams, managing expectations, and making key decisions under pressure. My wake-up call was realizing that I had both the ability and the responsibility to guide a strategic project from start to finish, creating real impact within the organization.

That's a great way to put it Gerardo. It sounds like you found something you're really good at. It's a nice way to find your calling.

My journey started in organizational and strategic management, not project management.
But over time, I realized that the most effective way to drive change and deliver lasting value was by applying a project-based approach.
That realization was my wake-up call — and it led me to dive deep into project management, and embrace it not just as a discipline, but as a strategic way of thinking and leading.

That's curiousLuis, my experience was a bit the other way around. I started in project management and then became more interested in the strategic side of things. Thanks for sharing!

I started working in Construction around 1999 as a Project Engineer. Worked that position until 2008 until I made my transition as a Project Manager. At first it was a little bit hard, since working all of those years as an engineer and than transition took me time I think couple of years that I made the switch of Managing a Team. I think the more you get involved working with different teams is when you feel more comfortable. When I switched from the Construction.indstry to the Telcomunications Industry I think I learned more specially when working from people around the globe. Different Teams, different cultures, diferrent races, barrier languages during team meeting. Trying to set a good time to have weekly meeting with resources from different time zones was a great experience.I got assigned to a lot of different projects and had very good people on my team. And my last Manager from Telecom she was the best. Great Team Player, Like people to grow she was a true leader. .

Nelson that's a great career path you've had! Going from Project Engineer to Project Manager, and then your experience working with global teams in Telecom sounds very interesting. Managing teams with different cultures and time zones must have been a great learning experience. It's good you had a supportive manager too. Thanks for sharing!

Several years ago, I worked for an oil company, and in addition to my usual work, my boss suggested I learn how to control projects in my department. That's how I was introduced to project management, especially the PMBOK. Later, I had the opportunity to implement a control PMO for the data management department.
This was an opportunity to put my knowledge into practice and develop processes, methodologies, tools, and strategies that would allow me to properly manage projects.
