Every project has many moving parts from day one scope, stakeholders, risks, team setup, documentation, and more. Over time, I’ve found myself focusing first on alignment with stakeholders before anything else. But I know some PMs prioritize team roles, while others go straight into risk planning or scheduling. What’s your first move when a project kicks off, and what’s your reason behind it?
When I start a project, the first thing I focus on is understanding the business objective. For example, what the organization is ultimately trying to achieve, and how the project directly supports that goal. This clarity helps anchor every decision that follows, from defining scope to engaging stakeholders and setting priorities. By aligning the project’s purpose with the broader business strategy, we can ensure that the team's efforts are focused, measurable, and delivering real value. It also sets the stage for better communication and alignment across all involved parties.

I completely agree that understanding the business goal from the start helps ensure that every decision aligns with the bigger picture. It’s great to hear how this focus keeps the project on track.

Thank you for raising such an insightful topic.
When starting a new project, my first focus is twofold: clarifying the project's purpose and value with stakeholders, and understanding the broader context to select the most appropriate delivery approach—whether predictive, agile, or hybrid.
I've learned that aligning early on why the project exists and what outcomes matter most builds a shared sense of direction, which in turn strengthens decision-making, prioritization, and long-term engagement.
At the same time, I invest in understanding the project's level of complexity, uncertainty, stakeholder expectations, and organizational culture.
These factors guide the choice of development approach and influence how we structure the team, govern the work, and manage risk.
In essence, I believe that starting right means starting with purpose and perspective.
It’s not just about speed—it’s about strategic alignment and contextual awareness.
Only then can we ensure that the path we choose is the one best suited to deliver value.
Looking forward to hearing how others approach their first steps too!

your point about aligning on the project’s purpose and value early on is key. It’s not just about speed; it’s about taking the time to understand the context and complexity, which makes the path clearer as the project progresses.

To share my opinion, the most important is to get the complete project understanding and prepare a proper project charter and briefly define and collect all the required details with regards to the project. Post that you need to meet all the stakeholder in understanding their point of views based the information which has collated in the project charter. Then other area of project management can be looked upon.

I love how you emphasize the importance of a project charter and stakeholder engagement early on. By gathering the right details and listening to stakeholders, you’re already setting the foundation for a smoother execution.

you’re spot on! alignment with stakeholders on the project vision is non-negotiable. It’s something that shouldn’t be underestimated, as it ensures everyone is moving toward the same goal from day one.

Always, always, always start with identifying the key stakeholders, talking to them, and capturing their wants, desires, needs, vision, expectations, priorities, and constraints. These stakeholders are the ultimate arbiters of project success; they literally help define what success is supposed to look like by the time you get to the end of the project. Understanding--and documenting--these things will help ensure all subsequent planning is aligned with the over-arching vision.

focusing on stakeholders’ needs and expectations is a fundamental step that too often gets overlooked. By ensuring their priorities are well understood upfront, you create a strong base for successful delivery.

When I start a new project, the first thing I focus on is identifying the stakeholders. Then, I evaluate them to see who supports the project, who is neutral, and who is against it. After that, I start managing them based on these evaluations. It's very important to know who the key players are from the beginning.

your approach to understanding stakeholder support levels early on is excellent. It’s critical to know who your allies are and who may need more attention to ensure smooth collaboration throughout the project.

I agree wholeheartedly with your thoughts. Getting early buy in on the vision sets the tone for the entire project and keeps things on track even when challenges arise.
