Have you, as a project manager, been affected by recent organizational cost-cutting measures like layoffs or reduced use of consultants?

Many organizations are cutting costs by downsizing white-collar roles and limiting third-party support. I'm curious whether fellow project managers have experienced this trend—through restructures, tighter budgets, or heavier workloads—and how it has influenced your role, team dynamics, or ability to deliver results.

Yes, I was working on a program partnering with NASA to develop the next breakthrough in fuel efficient passenger planes. The current US administration does not favor sustainability, and is trying to push more technology development from the public to the private sector where they can be monetized on a quarterly basis rather than supporting long term strategies which benefit the larger population.

The senior people at NASA have already been offered early retirement. They are incentivizing more early retirement by threatening to slash future retirement benefits. Now we are documenting what we learned to this point and pausing the program indefinitely.

Thanks for sharing this, and I'm sorry to hear that the US administration is making such decisions. I will refrain from saying anything else. Good luck with your next adventures!

Thanks, and yes it is a politically sensitive subject.

Fortunately for me, I am at the point in my career where my reputation opens many doors for me and it is more a matter of which new job is the best fit for my next career move. It is certainly more difficult for people newer in their careers or within their organizations.

The disruption to projects though is huge, even if yours is not the one cancelled. Morale takes a big hit, and there is typically a significant lag between when you add even the best person to a new team, and when they are performing the new job at a high level without requiring a lot of coaching.
