Hi colleagues,

We often talk about big project disasters, like the Titanic, and the lessons we learn from them. But, I think it would be very interesting to also document the "formula for success" from projects that went well and even exceeded expectations.

Imagine if PMI could help sponsor this for the most important projects they publish each year. What do you all think about this idea? Do you believe it would be useful to study success more closely?

There's already been lots of research on very large projects/programs and lessons captured from those. Dr. Bent Flyvbjerg is just one researcher/author who has done this.

The challenge is in getting senior stakeholders to apply the lessons...

Thanks for sharing that information Kiron, It's good to know there's already research out there. I agree completely with your point: the real challenge is getting senior stakeholders to actually apply those lessons. Regards! Francisco.

Francisco, there can be a general formula for success but what matters most if the specific formula that applies to your projects and organization.

Rami that could be true. There might be a general formula for success. But, as you say, we can't be sure about the specific formula for our projects or organization without really studying it. That's why I think documenting success is so important!
