Practical PM experience is obviously a vital factor for success in consultancy. Are there potential clients that insist on a particular qualification?

Speaking from my experience, experience can vary greatly and is perceived differently by each individual. Having a qualification (provided it is accredited by an academic institution or a professional body) is essential for first-time consultants. This gives clients a level of assurance and confidence that the consultant or consultancy firm they are engaging with can deliver quality work. I have noticed job postings that specifically mention qualifications as part of the selection criteria. While experience is crucial for performing the job effectively, qualifications are necessary to pass the initial evaluation. In summary, qualifications help you pass the first screening process, while experience ensures you can get the job done.

I think certifications and experience at table stakes. In my experience, clients make their decision primarily on the firm (or person's) references, case studies, and conversations about the work to be done. That's how they judge both the upside (what can they do for us) and the risk (why hire this person/firm over a big name that might not do a great job...but no one gets fired for hiring?)
Thanks Sara

Yes, many clients do require specific qualifications, such as PMP or PRINCE2 certifications, as a baseline for consultancy credibility. While practical experience is crucial, these certifications often serve as proof of standardized knowledge and professionalism, helping build client trust and confidence. However, some clients prioritize demonstrated results and expertise over formal qualifications.
Thanks for the feedback Mehdi
