Every project professional has faced setbacks. Share a time when a project didn't go as planned, and tell us the most crucial lesson you extracted from that experience. More importantly, how did that specific lesson fundamentally change the way you manage or approach projects moving forward?

I have learned throughout my career as a PM to trust, but verify. It may seem like more of an annoyance to double-check and make sure something is done, but this is absolutely crucial when it comes to being held accountable. If you let people slide through the cracks by telling you something was accomplished - then you will end up taking the blame later down the road. Build trust within the team early and communicate often to avoid these issues.

I'd say focus on what you can control or influence.

Sometimes I have encountered situations in which a key project has been sabotaged due to conflict of interest between members of senior management, therefore bypassing the standard communication channels and processes.

As frustrated as one can feel, it is important to reflect on the situation and separate the issue from the person(s).
