The role is needed given the criticality of effective requirements management but it might not need to be a dedicated BA. So long as there is someone on the project team who is fulfilling the role of a BA to elicit and analyze the requirements effectively, that should work. On small projects, I've seen PMs wearing the hat of both PM and BA whereas on larger technology-focused ones you might have a PM, a BA and a Business Systems Analyst (the latter focusing on detailed system/technical requirements).

Absolutely, the role of a Business Analyst is often underestimated, yet it’s a catalyst for project success. A BA bridges the gap between business needs and technical execution, ensuring requirements are clear, validated, and aligned with strategic objectives. In my experience, their contributions go beyond documentation, they facilitate stakeholder conversations, uncover hidden assumptions, and translate vision into actionable deliverables. By doing so, they reduce rework, improve solution fit, and help teams stay focused on value rather than just outputs.
