BIM is a system which used from the design to the construction and throughout the operation phase of a structure.
There are different software tools are used like Revit, Allplan or Primavera for design, planning or facility management in BIM.
You can see architectural, structural and mep (mechanical, electrical and plumbing) models of a building in one place thanks to BIM.
And also, it can be integrated the other technologies such as IoT and CIS for CIM (City Information Modeling).

What are the your experiences about BIM?

Unfortunately, this has always excited in the theory in the last 9 years of my construction experience in Kenya. This has not been adopted by most of the small firms and I look forward to the dya I will get to see, witness and use BIM in my projects..

Using of BIM can start at public projects like huge infrastructure projects. Incentive and attitude of the goverment are important accross the public and private sector projects in BIM using. Also, other organisations like universities and sector associations can contribute the using BIM such as, buildingSMART International is the digital transformation community from UK.

Ilker, I first worked with BIM in 2008 in Qatar, and it was an essential tool in improving project coordination and efficiency. One of the main benefits I’ve experienced is the significant reduction in change orders and rework. By allowing all disciplines to collaborate within a shared digital model, potential design clashes can be detected and resolved early, which helps prevent costly issues on site. This is especially valuable on large and complex projects where multiple teams and systems must work together seamlessly.

In Canada, BIM is widely implemented using software such as Revit, which integrates architectural, structural, and MEP models into a single environment. This level of coordination makes it much easier to manage design updates, streamline communication, and maintain accuracy throughout all phases of a project.

I’ve not used BIM directly, but I really can perceive, how it’s transforming collaboration in the construction sector. Even from a project management standpoint, it’s fascinating to see how visual modeling and data integration are helping teams align design, cost, and scheduling decisions early on.
Sounds like BIM encourages a more integrated project mindset, breaking silos between architects, engineers, and contractors. That kind of transparency is something we try to achieve in any industry, not just construction.

I’d love to hear how your teams handle governance and version control in BIM environments, that seems like one of the trickiest parts from a coordination perspective.

I have been working with BIM since 2013, through Navisworks across architectural, structural, and MEP disciplines, as well as in oil and gas projects. My main focus has been on clash detection and resolving coordination issues during the design stage, well before execution at site.
This proactive approach has significantly reduced rework and saved both time and cost on projects. In the Middle East, BIM has now become mandatory for almost all construction projects, and it continues to play a crucial role in improving project quality, coordination, and overall efficiency.

In my experience, Autodesk Revit-based BIM workflows remarkably upgrade coordination between architectural, structural, and MEP teams. With coordinated models, teams can identify design conflicts early through processes like MEP clash detection services, minimizing costly rework during construction. BIM also supports better scheduling, cost control, and facility management, especially when linked with tools like Oracle Primavera P6 for project planning.
