Laura, I actually recently posted about this on my LinkedIn page. After spending time reading the new edition in details, I can confidently say I prefer it over the 7th. It feels far more all-inclusive and brings the various dimensions of project management together in a cohesive and practical way:
1) Core Principles: These remain solid anchors, shaping how we think and behave as project professionals.
2) Performance Domains: They continue to provide outcome-focused guidance that reflects the realities of modern project environments.
3) Expanded Guidance on AI and PMOs: I appreciate the increased emphasis on emerging technologies and organizational enablers. It acknowledges how quickly the landscape is evolving and offers a foundation for navigating those changes.
4) Reintroduced Process Guidance (as Focus Areas): This is a big one. The 8th edition revisits process-based thinking but in an evolved, non-prescriptive way. It provides structure without rigidity, allowing teams to adapt the guidance across agile, predictive, and hybrid approaches.
Overall, the 8th edition strikes a better balance between principles and practical application, offering both strategic direction and actionable guidance. For me, it feels like a more complete and usable resource for today’s project managers.
