Do you have any tips on good project management practices for technical infrastructure projects (data center move, server upgrade, network upgrade, virtualization, cloud migration, etc.)?
I appreciate all your responses. This would be very helpful. Saving Changes...

Hi Arlene,
In our company we are in the process of building a data center. Some considerations being the difference in this process:
- Company Hiring expert to prepare a Project Executive considering a total outsourcing for this venture;
- Strong synergy with our internal engineering team (IT, Electrical and Construction);
- RFP Development from the Executive Project
Our internal staff will be responsible for the technical leadership of the project, together with the selected supplier. Thus, focused on project management, we can use the best practices already disseminated in the Company.
Sincerely, Saving Changes...

There are many good suggestions posted so far that provide valid pointers when dealing with infrastructure projects in IT. All of the suggestions rank pretty high, I would suggest that when dealing with infrastructure a phased approach is always best. Avoid the "big bang" as another put it when it is time to "go live" with the project. Many PM's fall into the trap of flipping the switch and then watching as the project deliverable crashes and burns, even after testing.
Slow roll out in a planned fashion is always the best approach, unless you are in disaster recovery mode (even then avoid flipping the switch). Using a planned roll out, when something goes wrong, and it will, you and your team will know where to start looking. This will give you a methodical path to resolution (logical troubleshooting).
There is always unknown risk which can be reduced with this method. It has worked for me for years. Saving Changes...
Now, after some weeks working in this project (bidding to try to win it) I think the angular phase will be planning and engineering product in this planning phase. We need to I teg rate all providers requests and requisites to ensure a smooth deployment.
At this moment we do not have detail engineering done, but we have enough market knowledge to give a bid to customer and start the project.
My key in this moment is planning deployment. What do you think?
Best regards.

I've dealt with a few infrastructure projects in my years. One thing to remember is that personnel who will be handling HVAC (heating, ventilation & air conditioning) are not IT professionals so they require a different touch. Saving Changes...
We have just won Datacenter project with site adquisition, engineering, procurement, construction, implementing, and testing all infrastructure (datacom equipment - ready, NOC, warehouse, climate, etc. ). This for 6 datacenters in Huancavelica, Ayacucho, Apurimac at 3500 msnm. We need to identify what will be outsourced and what not. The timing is 121 days. That is a great challenge. Saving Changes...
I've been assigned to oversee creation of a VMware Portal, using Open Nebula, that will allow business units and other entities within the organization to spin up their own VM's with minimal help coming from our shared services IT staff. I'm a new PM and haven't a clue what the best method is to manage this, nor what are the best forms and templates I should use. I anyone has any advise or perhaps any templates that would help, I would be grateful! Thank you so much! Saving Changes...
