How do you manage projects that involve the full life cycle of Big Data Management?
Why is managing big data different from regular projects? Saving Changes...

Ok, here I go (hehehehe). First of all let me say: there is no diference with any other type of projects. Second let me say: there is nothing new below the sun. The concept started with other name more than 30 years before with Mr Inmon, IBM and others works. So, as in other type of projects, as a project manager you need to understand the solution (that somebody will define) to create all related to project scope. The challenge is for people who will define the product (solution) to be created by the project. So, it is not a project manager challenge or it is not something diferent from a project perspective.

Sergio, you remind me of Bill Inmon's first white paper in 2001 on the subject of Data Warehousing. I agree Bog Data is just a new name with a little advanced tweaking. The only difference from traditional Project Management I could see is probably a longer duration project for Big Data as it deals with data analytics in long run. Maybe sometimes it is more complex, so we can treat these x projects in the category of Large and Complex Projects, or maybe sometimes these are not even projects at all, but programs where a number of database and data warehousing projects are working towards realizing a common benefit to satisfy organizational strategic goals. Generally speaking, Big Data Projects are not any different.

Perhaps I did not understand your point, but I do not agree with you Suhail. Is like any other project. All the components (mainly activities) will be performed but subject matter experts so is the same than in other projects. Project manager must not be aware about complexity of activities because, when subject matter experts define all related to activities, they will consider inside the estimations all related to it. Each time I have the responsability for this topic my organization manage it as a program. But that is a matter of organizational strategy to define it as a program or not. Saving Changes...
