How did you promote a diverse membership in your project team? What roadblocks did you experience? How did you resolve them?

In my experience the Diversity comes as part of the projects i worked. not necessarily by choosing the team members but because of the nature of projects and companies i worked for.

The main roadblocks encountered are related to communication and the other main is about timezones.
The Communication aspects it is important to understand the spoken rules and also the hidden rules to be able to succeed. And related to timezone is trying to find a middle way or prepare the communication in a time where you know it will receive answer while you are away.

I personally love diversity. It brings more challenge to the project and you have to remain awake to problems which you cannot imagine in normal projects. Yes, communication is a big challenge with diversity but handling communication becomes so natural, if you understand the dynamics of diversity. I remember Jerry Brightman telling us in Leadership Institute Class of 2005, do not be afraid of communications in diversity, everyone in the team is equally facing the communications dilemma and you will soon find the common ground. It is but natural, but definitely we need to be a bit more structured to reach that goal.
