recently had an interesting experience and would value the community’s perspective.

After completing a project/program management interview, several members of the interview panel sent me LinkedIn connection requests. Shortly after connecting, they began asking questions about challenges and issues related to the role and the organization.

While this could be seen as continued engagement or an informal way to assess problem-solving, it also blurs the line between a formal interview process and professional networking. In my case, I eventually decided to decline the offer.

How would you approach a situation like this? Would you treat it as a continuation of the interview and respond with detailed insights, or keep responses more general until a formal next step is communicated?

Curious to hear how other PMs would handle it.

Omar, this is definitely an unconventional post-interview approach, but I wouldn’t overthink it. I’d choose to see it positively as it likely signals genuine interest and a desire to understand how you think beyond the structured interview format. In project and program management, how you approach ambiguity and stakeholder challenges often matters more than textbook answers.

That said, I’d still maintain professional boundaries. I’d respond thoughtfully but keep insights high-level until a formal next step is communicated. You can demonstrate your thinking without diving into detailed solutions or effectively doing free consulting. In other words, show your approach while protecting your value.

I’d connect, but keep answers high-level and redirect detailed questions to the formal interview process. It helps with fairness, confidentiality, and avoids “free consulting” via DMs. If they want depth, schedule it as the next interview/case step.

I’d treat it as informal networking, not an extension of the interview. It’s fine to respond and engage, but I’d keep the discussion high-level until the process moves to a formal next step.
Detailed problem-solving or consulting is better handled within the official interview process, where expectations and context are clear.
