An excellent perspective.
I agree that Product Owners play a critical role in shaping the ethical direction of AI-enabled products. However, the most difficult challenges rarely emerge when ethical principles are clear. They emerge when legitimate objectives come into conflict - innovation versus risk, personalization versus privacy, or speed versus transparency.
At that point, ethical outcomes cannot depend solely on the judgment of a Product Owner. They require clear decision rights, escalation paths and governance mechanisms that define who can approve, challenge or accept the consequences of difficult choices.
Perhaps the real challenge is not defining the role of Product Owners in AI ethics, but ensuring that ethical decisions are governed effectively across the entire system.
After all, ethical AI depends not only on good intentions, but on good decision governance.

I believe that following Agile values can solve a lot of ethics-related challenges. PMI's Code of Ethics is another way of ensuring that AI use is ethical. Unfortunately, the PO, as a profession, is not well defined and it is hard to bound the role to a certain code of ethics.
AI ethics refers to the principles and guidelines that ensure AI systems are designed and used fairly, transparently, responsibly, and without harm to individuals or society. In simple terms, transparency ensures that AI is not a “black box,” but a system people can trust, question, and understand.

I believe that 'standard' ethical values must be used when AI is adopted. We don't need new or specific codes of ethics for AI.
AI ethics is becoming a critical governance area, and Product Owners are uniquely positioned to drive responsible AI adoption. In most organizations, AI ethics is still addressed reactively through compliance checklists rather than proactively embedded in the product development lifecycle.
Product Owners play a pivotal role because they sit at the intersection of business value and user impact. They should be championing ethical considerations during backlog prioritization, ensuring that bias testing, fairness audits, and transparency requirements are treated as acceptance criteria rather than afterthoughts.
Practically, this means Product Owners need to ask tough questions during refinement: What data are we training on and does it represent our diverse user base? What are the failure modes and who gets disproportionately affected? Can users understand and challenge AI-driven decisions that affect them?
The most mature organizations are establishing AI ethics review boards with cross-functional representation, including Product Owners, data scientists, legal, and end-user advocates. They are building ethical guardrails into their Definition of Done and creating feedback loops that monitor AI systems post-deployment for unintended consequences.
