Hi everyone! 👋
I passed my PMP exam with an Above Target (AT) overall score! It was an incredible journey, and I wanted to pay it forward to this amazing community by sharing the exact roadmap, resources, and exam-day strategies that got me across the finish line.
If you are currently in the thick of your PMP journey, remember to keep things "simple and stupid." Don't overcomplicate it! Here is exactly how I structured my success:
🗓️ The Timeline & Application Strategy
- Get it done early: Do not delay your application! I submitted my PMP application on week 2 of my course, received approval by week 3, and scheduled my exam on week 4.
- The Sweet Spot: I highly recommend scheduling your exam 1 to 2 weeks maximum after your prep course ends. Keep that knowledge fresh while it is hot in your head!
📚 My Study Habit Loop & Materials
- Build a Weekly Habit: I listened to my course MP3 audio files every single Sunday before class and completed test sets weekly. Consistency beats cramming!
- Active Note-Taking: I printed out my PMP Prep Workbook, bound it into a physical book, and highlighted/made notes directly into it while listening to lectures.
- Visualizing the Flows: I printed out End-to-End (E2E), Agile, and Ricardo Vargas process flows. This is crucial for understanding exactly which knowledge area and process group a specific process belongs to.
- Leveraging AI for Rationale: When I missed a question on practice reviews, I fed the question into an AI tool. I asked it to mark the right answer and explicitly explain why the other options were incorrect. This trained my brain to understand the core PMI rationale (just remember to double-check the results, as AI isn't 100% perfect!).
🎯 The Practice Exam Score Tracker (Be Realistic!)
Don't panic if your practice scores aren't perfect. Here is exactly what my dashboard looked like before I passed AT:
- PMI Study Hall (The Ultimate Resource): I completed 2 full exams and 15 mini-exams twice. I also did 191 out of 717 practice questions (scoring 68%) and played every single game in the Game Center once. Study Hall is the absolute closest thing to the real exam format and environment - use it as much as possible!
- Free PMP Prep Pack: Printed the resources and scored 61% on the 200-question practice test.
- PrepCast: Completed 120 questions twice, scoring 59% on the first try and jumping to 75% on the second.
- Oliver Lehmann: Scored 69% on a 100-question set.
- Process Mapping Game: Tested my understanding of the 49 processes online until my scores hit 84%, 88%, and 94%.
🛡️ Exam Day Secrets: Shaking off the Panic
- Don't panic if the start is rough: My first 60 questions were much harder than expected. It took me 1.5 hours to finish them, which completely unsettled me.
- Take your breaks! I used my first 10-minute break to grab a drink, have a snack, use the bathroom, and walk around. I completely shook off the stress, got back into the flow, and easily regained my lost time. Listen to your body and take that second break too!
- Earplugs are a lifesaver: I used the earplugs provided by the test centre to completely block out ambient room noise.
- Trust your first instinct: The exam environment has a built-in calculator, timer, and flag option. I flagged questions as little as possible. When I revisited my flagged questions at the end, I realized I hardly ever changed my answers. Trust your gut!
📝 What the Exam Actually Looks Like
- Question Layout: The vast majority were 4-choice situational questions with 1 right answer.
- Drag and Drops: Expect about 4–5 of these (matching a process item to a definition, matching EVM terms like CV/SV/CPI/SPI to definitions, or matching environmental factors).
- Multiple Choice: Expect about 4–5 questions where you must select 2 or 3 correct answers.
- The Results: I received a "Provisional Pass" printout immediately upon leaving the testing centre on Thursday noon. My official, detailed email from PMI arrived late Friday afternoon confirming the AT overall score!
Keep pushing forward, stay calm, and trust your preparation. If I can do it, you can too! Drop any questions you have below, and I'll be happy to help you navigate your journey! 👇✨
