Construction has always relied heavily on predictive planning—and understandably so. Contracts, procurement lead times, physical sequencing, safety requirements, permits, and cost commitments all require a certain level of predictability. You cannot simply “iterate” everything on a construction site.
But anyone who has spent enough time around construction projects also knows that the original plan rarely survives completely unchanged.Design modifications appear. Site conditions surprise us. Materials arrive late. Client priorities shift. Contractors face constraints that were not visible months earlier. And increasingly, new expectations around technology and sustainability enter the project while it is already moving.
In practice, I have often found that the challenge is not whether we have a plan, but how intelligently we respond when reality starts moving away from that plan.
That makes me wonder whether we are sometimes asking the wrong question.
Instead of asking:
“How can we make construction more Agile?”
perhaps we should ask:
“How can we make construction more adaptive?”
The distinction may be important.
Construction may not need to adopt Agile frameworks everywhere. A strong predictive baseline will probably remain essential. But certain parts of a project—short-term planning, design coordination, stakeholder feedback, risk responses, procurement decisions, technology adoption, or even sustainability-related choices—may benefit from a much more adaptive mindset.
Perhaps the future is therefore neither purely predictive nor purely Agile.
It may be about becoming better at deciding what should remain predictable, what should become adaptive, and when to move between the two.
