When Your Project Succeeds But the Metrics Don't Show It — What Do You Report?

I manage marketing and admissions projects delivered on time and on budget, though their impact may take months to emerge. At GIFT University, an admissions campaign launched on schedule, but its 143% increase in admissions became clear only in the next intake cycle. Reporting “success” immediately would have shown delivery, not the outcome leadership valued.

How do you track progress when results take months to prove themselves?

A project can be delivered on time, on budget and still be too early to judge properly. In a lot of cases, the real benefit only becomes visible months later.
That’s why the reporting shouldn’t stop at delivery metrics. It should also track a few indicators that show whether the project is actually moving toward the result it was meant to achieve.
The key is to agree those indicators early. Otherwise, success gets defined after the event, which usually tells you very little.
