I asked AI a slightly separate question - Does AI challenge us when appropriate, or is it a prediction engine that tries to optimize our intent. I won't paste the entire response here, but part of the response was a few questions and responses.
- Can AI challenge assumptions? Absolutely. - Will AI challenge assumptions without being asked? Sometimes, but not consistently. - Can AI reliably determine when challenging an assumption is appropriate? Not yet, at least not without meaningful limitations.
These speak to your question. If we're not intentionally using it to challenge our assumptions, it may only validate or add to what we already believe. It posed a couple more questions that I believe appropriately emphasize that our intent is more important than the AI capabilities:
- When AI challenges us, are we evaluating its reasoning, or simply giving greater weight to the answer because it sounds independent and objective? - Are we using AI to improve the quality of our thinking, or merely to increase our confidence in conclusions we've already reached?
Your question raises a risk we should be aware of - AI can become a powerful tool for reinforcing confirmation bias. It often presents plausible, logical arguments. They sound right but can be wrong, especially when the AI doesn't have all the information. Saving Changes...

I think AI can be very useful for challenging our assumptions, but we need to be intentional about it. For example, instead of asking AI whether a project plan looks reasonable, we could ask it to identify weaknesses, question our estimates, or explain why our proposed approach might fail.
It's important to provide enough context and evaluate its responses critically. AI might identify something we overlooked, but it can also make assumptions of its own. Ultimately, we still need to validate its suggestions against the actual project conditions. Saving Changes...
