On Friday I coached project managers for four hours at the Career Growth Hub at PM West 2026. Different industries, different project types, one pattern underneath almost every conversation.
Each of them delivers. Their projects land, their stakeholders trust them, and their organizations lean on them when work gets hard. Yet the next role, the senior title, the program seat, keeps going to someone else.
Delivery got them here. The next level asks for something delivery alone cannot prove: how you think in the room, how you handle the conversation everyone else avoids, how people experience your leadership when the plan falls apart.
I spent eight years as an executive director before I coached anyone. I know how lonely those decisions get, and how few people will tell you the truth about how you lead. That honest mirror is the work.
So a question for the PMs here who made the jump: what changed in how you led that finally moved you to the next level?
I will be reading every answer. The pattern in them is usually the curriculum.
