What is Knowledge Management, Really!

What is the purpose of KM in the Corporation. It is to improve profits, and/or to reduce cost ( which improves profit) Where do we tie knowledge to improved performance and how does this happen. KM should have significant buy in from the employees to have profound effect on performance of an organisation. It should never be imposed on employees if you want their full participation.
