You are assigned as a project manager for internal IT projects for your company. Since these are internal and not directed to new clients, availability of resources is limited and never 100% fcused on the project. What tips and recommendations do you have for these type of projects?

Great question, Luis. It seems like the project manager often finds him/her self with more responsibility than authority. It is important to find ways to build influence beyond the confines of the project charter and org chart (not an easy task).

Since IT is essentially a "service" business in many organizations, one thing I found helpful was to build coalitions and relationships over time throughout the enterprise--helping others above and beyond when they had IT issues. Then at crunch time, I found that others were willing to do the same to make "my" project a success. When you put out that desperate 2:00 A.M call for help, you''ll find out who your friends really are! ;-)

Thank you Bruce. Building strong relationships is a very effective tool, however, sometimes I find it difficult to complete this kind of projects on time/scope/budget, specially when team members are new to the organization.
