We all know IT Projects can be a very broad concept, it covers different scopes, methodologies and technologies. I would like to know your insights and opinions about trending IT Projects for the next five years.

One trend that I see is that small and medium sized companies are recognizing the value of formalized PM procedures, and are setting up formal and semi-formal project management offices (PMO''s) much earlier in their growth cycles.

Agreed. There seems to be a trend in South Africa pointing toward formalising the process of delivering projects within budget. The general trend is that most IT projects are over budget and very late. I am noticing a real drive to curb this trend and smaller projects are even added to the PMO responsibility list.
I am seeing a definitive move towards value for money. Delivering ONLY what is needed and adding real value.

Thank you for your comments guys. I am specialized on software development project management and I would like some advice about the correct IT direction to take and which trending areas you recommend me to point my career at. My expertise is on Java and .Net projects but, since I have been in the consulting and management area, my technical knowledge is not very deep.

Hi Luis,

I would recommend data mining, or as the media calls it, data science. There is a huge trend of companies with untold amount of data going through it and finding statistical relationships to better model their products. That sounds general because the industry has gone in so many directions. It's definitely still in the ramp up, although hype is at 1000%.

There is a lot of development already occurring in the mobility space and definitely there is more to happen in the next 5 years. ''Internet of Things'' will also be a place a lot of development will be happening.

My knowledge is limited up to here and I am sure there is more.

The first thing I can comment is: to understand that it is not an IT project, it is a business project where IT is a component inside a solution for a business problem. The second one is the need to use the business analyst role to act as a bridge between the business and the IT department.

I agree, the role of Business analyst is becoming more and more important these days in orden to deliver real value. Talking about the internet of things and web 4.0, these are very interesting issues, any related resources you could share?

About business analysis you can search for the "Practitioners Guide for Business Analysis" inside the PMI´s site.

I think we will see a point where project management will be championed by the C-suite, rather than just the CIO. IT have for the longest time been the harbinger of project management methodologies, processes and assets. Once CEOs start leading the charge, project management will truly become a force to be recognized.
