Have you taken the exam? Passed? Failed? Failed and then passed?

Help out a fellow project manager and post your tip on studying for and taking the exam. Here are some we''ve gathered from members so far:

J.l Laroche: Try not to try to absorb all the PMBOK content by heart, focus on the main stream of processes and knowledge, the tools and the results and you will be fine don''t worry. remember to get first through all questions, answering the evident ones and flagging the others and then get back to the flagged ones, and think of it, even if you''re unsure of the answer, always, always pick one, if you''re wrong you will not loose points and you have 1 on 4 chances to get it good...

M. Hartsough: When reviewing those questions you flagged, don''t start second-guessing yourself. IMO, in all probability your initial answer was correct. Don''t change your original answers unless you definitely found a better one. Remember to answer from the "PMI Perspective". The PMI Perspective isn''t necessarily how you or your organization manages projects.

F. McCaskell: take a break every 50 questions - no matter if you don''t think you need it. This will prevent you from being burned out at the end.

C.Tong: don''t think the exam is easy or you won''t prepare yourself well

I spent 6 months studying and i failed last Saturday with a very bad score . I was confident that i can pass it as I was passing the tests with 80% while i was practicing by myself.
Reasons i would consider would be:
The exam is too long and you will get hungry and need to go to bathroom. I didn't expect it and i didn't manage my time in a way that i can handle that part,
I didn't know the Agile part won't be in the exam. (Its the second Half of the book). i spent a lot of time studying each and every appendixes and i think my brain was baffled with a lot of information.
In a very funny way i mixed all the formula when i realized i don't have enough time. the second 100 questions; i was just trying to catch up with time and it would be another assumption.

So here is a question for you all:
- Should i study Agile at all or just a general knowledge which is mentioned in each chapter is enough for passing this exam.
- I think i should pass the exam again as i don't want to lose the information i've already gathered in my brain... How long should i wait as i can study almost 2 hours a day?
Any suggestion?

Wrote and passed the PMP exam in June of 2017 on my second attempt.

Some tips:
1) take the time to prepare yourself
2) develop a learning plan for yourself
3) read/practice example questions and time yourself
4) understand what you need to know
5) find a mentor in Project Management that you can bounce questions off of
6) study, study, study
7) read the PMBOK (many times)

Good luck!

I have failed the PMP exam twice. Once in March on the 5th edition and again on the 6th edition. I have used Aileen's online study course - watched over 350 videos answered over a 1,000 questions. When I took the practice exam it was around 65%. So I thought I was ready for the exam again. Some of my questions I got wrong on the practice exam were stupid ones and I knew the answer. My fear was equation questions on the real exam, but thankfully I didn't have many. A lot of questions on change requests/control and stakeholder. I thought I answered them correctly, but that was not the case. I need some suggestions on how I can study better or differently than how I have been. I've put in many hours and my way is not working. Please let me know of any courses that might help or other study material. I have heard of Rita, but haven't checked her out.

Hi Julie Hall, I am sorry to hear about your failed attempts. May like to Memorize All ITTOs, Rita Mulchay's Book is must read, Aileen Ellis's course is also quite comprehensive and her exam mock questions were found to be really realistic, Better luck next time.

I Just Passed my PMP, first attempt!
Such a relief to see that final results page read "Congratulations" especially if due to several circumstances, all you had was just 1 week of time and a PMBOK guide. I actually only had time for one single attempt at it. I have seen several posts regarding Rita's book but I feel PMP is more about the experience you have with Projects. PMBOK guide is definitely a must if you are attempting although I heard about several PMPs who did not even own a PMBOK and soley relied on Rita's book. This is however my experience with the PMP. Do read the PMBOK once cover to cover and mark every single important sentence and then the second time only focus on the highlighted/marked areas and the figures. Finally answer atleast 1000 sample questions, and before you know it, you will see PMP next to your name. All the best

Hi Jenny, yes I did, due to the nature of my Job, I was only able to take a week off from work to prepare and I only used the PMBOK guide and Lynda learning on Linkedin. I did however watch a plethora of videos online and took about 1000 sample questions to practice. There were a few indirect Agile questions, personally I did not have any direct questions.

It would be interesting to know how/if these strategies change or morph with the testing for the PMBOK 6th edition now in effect. Any insights there? Has anyone taken it or know of someone who has? I have colleagues and students that will need some guidance.
